IOSH Managing Safely

This course is suitable for:


Managers and supervisors with responsibility for health and safety management - it is for the non-health & safety expert.

Learning Outcomes


The aim of the course is to ensure that safety requirements are appreciated by people employed as line managers and enable them to review their own departmental systems for safety. The course will help with introducing new controls or implementing changes as appropriate to make their workplace safer.
  • Apply basic management principles & practices to health and safety issues.
  • To set achievable health and safety objectives, to plan and implement courses of action to achieve those objectives
  • Recognise hazards that are present in the workplace and be able to set appropriate control measures.
  • Take into account risks posed by human factors or those arising from ergonomic factors.
  • Carry out and record basic assessments of the risks associated with workplace hazards and recommend suitable control measures.
  • Ensure that adequate information, training and supervision are provided for employees.
  • Investigate an accident or incident involving injury or damage to determine the causes and take appropriate actions.
  • Communicate effectively on health and safety issues to other supervisors, work people and health and safety professionals.
  • Understand main legal responsibilities of employers’ managers and act to fulfil them.

It has been established that for every accident leading to serious injury there are approximately 10 minor injuries and 30 property damage incidents occurred prior to the major event.
